Connectivity in the Gulf Islands

Close to civilization. Further from signal than you'd think.

Deceptively patchy

The Gulf Islands sit between Vancouver Island and the mainland — you'd expect coverage. What you get instead: fine near Ganges and Montague, gone in the anchorages between. The islands shadow each other; a tower on Salt Spring doesn't help you behind Wallace Island. It's a patchwork, and patchworks are what boosters are worst at.

Booster or Starlink?

The honest answer depends on your anchorages. If you live on the hook in the same two bays and they both have a usable whisper of signal, a properly installed booster (ISED-certified, properly aimed — see the marine hub) can work. If you cruise the whole chain, Starlink is the only thing that doesn't care which island you're behind.

The hybrid setup

Many Gulf Islands boaters end up hybrid: cellular near town (cheap, fast when it works), Starlink everywhere else. The trick is a clean install where both systems share the boat's network without fighting — which is an installer problem, not a hardware problem.
