Roam vs Maritime: which plan for your boat?

Starlink's plan lineup changed in 2026. Here's the honest breakdown for Canadian boaters — including the catch nobody advertises.

Roam 100 / 300 GBCapped high-speed, then slowedFine for weekends, not for remote work
Roam UnlimitedUnlimited30-day international limit; in-motion rules apply

Global PriorityPriority blocks, ocean-capableOverkill for coastal cruising; priced for it

Plan prices shift — check starlink.com for today's rates before deciding. The tiers matter more than the numbers: capped vs unlimited, territorial vs offshore.

The 40-foot cutoff

Personal Maritime was Starlink's answer to boaters priced out of the old Maritime plans — then they fenced it to non-commercial vessels under 40 feet. If your boat is 41 feet, you're out: Roam Unlimited for coastal work, Global Priority if you're genuinely offshore. It's arbitrary, it's annoying, and it's the rule.

The honest pick for BC cruisers

  • Weekender / seasonal: Roam 300 GB in season, Standby in winter. The seasonal math wins — see the numbers.
  • Full-time coastal cruiser under 40 ft: Personal Maritime if you qualify — unlimited without watching gigabytes.
  • Remote worker / heavy user: Roam Unlimited. Simple, pausable, no surprises.
  • Offshore passages: Global Priority. Expensive because it has to be.
